Jon Sheppard has always been addicted to adventure. In his award-winning books, Someday in a Place Out West, Always Colorado and Cowboys, Cowgirls & Wide Open Spaces, he shares with you his exciting insights, stories & photography. Jon’s many adventures, and experiences, helped develop his discerning photographic vision. But long before he picked up a camera, he was just a “Navy kid” for whom travel was commonplace.
As a youngster Jon lived on Kodiak Island, Alaska where he explored the local Navy base, shot .22 caliber rifles, and spent time on tug boats. Then, as a young adult, he lived in the U.S. Virgin Islands where he ran a scuba diving, and boat charter, business. Diving for sunken treasure and exploring the rainforest was a daily routine. When Jon returned to the mainland, he became a skydiver; his highest jump was from 20,000 feet.
In Tennessee, Jon opened a rock climbing school. He also gave whitewater rafting and kayaking lessons. Beyond the great outdoors, Jon played drums in Nashville, the country music capital of the world.
Since 1987, Jon has called the Colorado high country home. Learning how to ski at Beaver Creek Resort was an exciting adventure for him. After several years Jon, and two friends, raised over $20,000 for the U.S. Disabled Ski Team. Setting out at 3AM, they set a world record by skiing eighteen different ski areas during one very long day!
Further utilizing his artistic talents, Jon worked as a camera operator for Channel 9 in Denver. His favorite gig was when he would film the Denver Broncos football games in the fall.
Jon’s travels have also taken him to areas as diverse as the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, Russia, and New Zealand. Truly, his photography spans the globe! But above all else, Jon is a born-again Christian.
